Whether you’re a vape pro or someone who has just recently started, one of the most important aspects of vaping is to know your device. There are a lot of different parts that go into making the perfect cloud, and one of the key parts of your device is the coil. If you’ve made the switch from cigarettes to vaping, you’ve probably already started to see the financial benefits of making the switch, but what you might not already know is that you can save even more. After the original purchase of your vape mod or e-cigarette, the only recurring costs that you will ever face are the cost of vape juice and the cost of coils. The frequency of these costs is already low, but they can be even further reduced once you learn how to make your coils last longer. Below are some tips for making your coils last to their full potential.
Prime Your New Coils
One of the biggest signs that you need to replace your oils are a burnt taste while you’re vaping. So, you’ve decided to get new vape coils—what happens next? One of the most important and effective ways to extend the life of your coil is to prime it before using it. What this means is that rather than switching your coils and then continuing on to vape as usual, you complete a few extra steps in order to enhance your experience and save your coils.
The first step when priming is to saturate the wicking material of the coil. There are juice holes on the sides of the coil head, which is where the wick is supposed to make contact with the vape juice. You will want to carefully place a drop of vape juice on each hole as well as inside the head. This will help to saturate the wick so you avoid burning the coil. After that you’ll want to take a few drags without activating your firing button. This is called a dry hit. You will want to do this 4 or 5 times. By doing this, you allow the vape juice from the tank to spread into the cotton of the wick. After properly preparing your coil for use, you will want to break it in. The wiring in the coil hasn’t had the chance to expand properly yet, so it’s best to ease into it. Start by taking fewer hits at a lower wattage, and then after priming you can work your way up to normal use.
Practice Good Vaping Habits
First and foremost, as mentioned above, be sure to prime your device. Once you’re set to go on that frontier, there are a few things you’ll want to try and keep in mind so you don’t burn out your coils. Don’t over press the firing button on your device. If you pay attention to the flavor of the vapor, you should be able to tell if you’re firing at the right time. Some mods have features that tell you when to hold and release the firing button. Over pressing can cause dry hits, which will shorten the lifespan of your coils.
It’s also important not to over-hit. Leave a few seconds between drags so that your coil has time to absorb more e-liquid and cool down. If you don’t space them out, you could be leaving the dry between hits, which will cause them to burn out.
Along with leaving time between hits, it is also better to not let your tank hit empty. Similar to a car, it’s better if you fill up at around a quarter tank so you don’t run the risk of running out of gas, or in this case vape juice. Dry firing or firing without juice will ruin your coil.
Finally, if you’re a more experienced vaper, you may do things like cloud chasing, which is more effective at a higher wattage. However, it is generally better for your device to hit at a lower wattage on a daily basis, and it generally won’t affect the quality of the vape experience.
Clean Your Coils
Some people may not realize that like most removable parts on anything, the coils can be cleaned to extend their use. Not only will it increase the life of the coil, but it will also enhance the experience when vaping by improving the flavor.
When cleaning your coil, you’ll want to start by blowing out the excess juice. This clears the way for a more successful cleaning. After removing as much juice as possible, you will want to run the coil under hot water. This will remove any left-over debris that may be lodged in the coil. After rinsing your coil, shake out the water and then set them out to air dry on a paper towel. You may want to do this overnight so that the coil completely dries before the next step. This will eliminate the chance for the coil to heat unevenly.
When it’s completely dry, attach the coil to the vaporizer. Once it has been firmly placed, press the firing button until the wraps of the coil are completely heated. This will cause the wiring to expand. Let it sit for a couple second to cool and then repeat this process again. When doing this you are going to want to look for signs that it is heating unevenly. If everything looks good from here, you can reassemble your vaporizer. It’ll be like using a new coil all over again.
If you follow these tips, you will see how to make your coils last longer and your trips to the vape shop can be minimized, which will save you even more than what you might’ve otherwise imagined. Taking care of your device will end up benefiting you in the end. Get to know your vaporizer and take care of it so that it can take care of you. If you don’t know all the parts of your device, be sure to familiarize yourself before messing around with it, but otherwise, enjoy the experience!
